Vertical Wells

How to create a vertical directional survey in PetroBench. Use the Vertical Well checkbox to auto-generate a straight survey from just a total depth.

If your well goes straight down, you do not need to type out every survey point. PetroBench can generate a full vertical survey for you from a single number: the total depth.

This page shows you exactly how.

Open the Directional Survey Tab

  1. Open your well from the Wells list
  2. Click the Directional Survey tab at the top
  3. Click New Empty Survey in the top-right of the Directional Surveys card

Create the Vertical Survey

In the New Empty Survey dialog:

  1. Give the survey a Name (for example, Vertical Survey)
  2. Tick the Vertical Well checkbox
  3. Click Create Empty Directional Survey

You will see a confirmation: Vertical Survey Created. Enter the measured depth to complete your survey.

Enter the Total Depth

Scroll down to the Directional Survey Details card. You will see one row with the MD (ftKB) cell highlighted in red and the message Enter measured depth to generate vertical survey.

  1. Type your total measured depth into the MD cell (for example, 8001)
  2. Click Save

PetroBench will automatically fill in 11 evenly-spaced survey points from 0 to your total depth, all with inclination and azimuth.

Check the 3D Wellbore

Scroll back up. The 3D Wellbore panel now shows a single straight green line going straight down from the surface to total depth.

That is your vertical survey. You are done.

Make It the Active Survey

If this well had another survey before, toggle the new vertical survey on in the surveys list so it becomes the primary. Only one survey can be active at a time.

You can switch back to the original survey later by toggling it on again. PetroBench keeps every survey you create.
