Importing Wells

Import wells from RodStar and SRod simulation files into PetroBench. Supported formats, what gets created, post-import checks, and troubleshooting.

Importing a legacy simulation file creates a well with a fully populated simulation, so you don't have to re-enter it by hand.

Supported Formats

ExtensionSource
.rsdxRodStar (standard / deviated well)
.rsvxRodStar (vertical well)
.inp6eSRod
.inp7SRod

Vendor PDF reports are also supported if your organization has PDF import enabled. Spreadsheet and survey files (.xlsx, .csv) use the Create Well flow instead, not this importer.

Single Import

  1. Go to Wells and click Import > Import from file (top-right of the list)
  2. Drag in or select your .rsdx, .rsvx, .inp6e, or .inp7 file
  3. Each file is validated automatically
  4. Click Import

Bulk Import

Importing several files at once is available on SME and Enterprise plans. Lower tiers import one file at a time.

  1. Click Import > Import from file
  2. Select multiple files
  3. Review the validation status on each
  4. Remove any failed files
  5. Click Import X Files

Validation Status

  • Spinner - validating
  • Green check - ready to import
  • Red X - failed validation

What Gets Created

Each file creates a well plus a fully populated simulation (named Design #001.00 ...), including:

  • The directional survey
  • Well details: fluids, pressures, pump and PSN depth
  • Tubing and the rod string (tapers)
  • The pumping unit, matched to the catalog or created as a custom unit

If a well with the same name already exists, the file is imported as a new simulation under that existing well instead of creating a duplicate well.

After Importing

  • Run the simulation. Imported .rsdx / .inp6e files arrive as pending and aren't calculated yet (only vendor PDFs carry results). Open the simulation and click Static.
  • Verify the directional survey, especially for vertical (.rsvx) wells, where points may be generated from the pump depth.
  • Review the fluid, pump, rod, and pumping unit tabs. Some values are backfilled from the file or your defaults, and an unmatched pumping unit may have been created as custom.

Limits

  • 50 MB per file
  • Multi-file batch size depends on your plan
