Automated Design Overview
Simulate millions of rod pump designs at once. Automated Design combines your pumping units, rod groups, and pump diameters, scores every candidate, and ranks the best configurations for a well.
RodSim answers "how does this design perform?". Automated Design answers "which design should I run?".
You provide the equipment options, the limits a design must respect, and the production you need. The engine builds every valid combination of pumping unit, crank hole, rod string, and pump diameter, simulates each one, and returns them ranked best-first.
Features
Full Search
Millions of candidate designs per run, built from your own equipment catalog.
Cost-Aware Ranking
Designs are ranked by quality and equipment cost together, not by score alone.
Dynamics Grid
The top candidates, plus a random sample, are re-simulated across a sweep of intake pressures and pump fill levels.
Apply to RodSim
Turn any ranked design into a RodSim simulation on the well in one click.
How It Works
Set Up Your Equipment Once
Define the pumping units and the rod grades and diameters available to you, with prices. See Equipment Configurations.
Start a Design Run
Open a well, go to Auto Design, and click New Design Run. Set the limits, the well data, and the equipment to search across.
Let the Engine Search
Every valid combination is simulated and scored. Runs are asynchronous, so you can close the page and come back.
Review the Ranking
Results arrive ranked by cost-weighted score. Compare the top designs side-by-side and review their dynamic performance.
Apply the Winner
Apply a design to the well to create a RodSim simulation from it, or export a PDF report.
Where to Find It
Automated Design has two entry points:
| Entry point | Shows |
|---|---|
| Automated Design in the Apps sidebar | Every run across every well you can see, with search, filters, and bulk actions |
| The Auto Design tab on a well | Only that well's runs, plus the New Design Run button |
A run always belongs to one well. The cross-well list is for finding and managing runs, not for starting them.
On the cross-well list, Filter narrows by status or by well, Columns shows or hides fields, and ticking runs opens Bulk Actions.
Run Status
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | The New Run form was started and autosaved, but never launched |
| Created | The run exists but has not reached the engine yet |
| Submitting | The payload is being sent to the design engine |
| Running | The engine is working through the scenarios |
| Completed | The run finished. Open it to review and apply a design |
| Under Review | A PetroBench expert is reviewing the designs. You are notified when they are released |
| Released | A reviewer released the results. Open the run to view and apply a design |
| Rejected | A reviewer asked for changes. Open the run for the note, adjust, and resubmit |
| Failed | The run did not finish. Hover the alert icon for the reason, then click Rerun |
| Canceling | A cancel was requested. The engine is stopping the current step |
| Canceled | The run was stopped before it finished |
Under Review, Released and Rejected only appear for organizations with expert review enabled. Everywhere else a finished run goes straight to Completed.
A run in progress can be canceled from its row or its page. A run that finished, failed, or was canceled can be rerun.
Automated Design and RodSim
The two applications share the same simulation engine and the same equipment catalog, so a design that scores well in Automated Design behaves identically when you open it in RodSim.
| Use | Application |
|---|---|
| You know the configuration and want its performance | RodSim |
| You want a taper generated for a configuration you already chose | Design Assistance |
| You want the best configuration found for you | Automated Design |
