Well Data

Well Data is where the physical characteristics of the well and equipment are entered, including the fluid properties, surface operating conditions, bottom hole pump details, and pumping unit details.

  1. Produced fluid properties are the first values required in well data. The Water Cut, Water Specific Gravity, and the Oil API are required inputs, but are populated with user defined defaults from the RodSim defaults section; all three are used to calculate the Fluid Specific Gravity. The variables are also used to calculate the fluid gradient which is found in Simulation Preferences. If a user creates a simulation by importing a third-party input file, all three fields will be populated from the input file.

  2. The next set of required variables are the surface condition variables; those being Casing Pressure, Tubing Pressure, Run Time, and Stuffing Box Friction. These variables are populated with user defined defaults from the RodSim defaults section. If a user creates a simulation by importing a third-party input file, the fields will be populated from the input file.

  3. The next set of required variables are the pump details; which are API Pump Type, Pump Diameter, Pump Friction, and Pump Volumetric efficiency. These variables are also populated with user defined defaults from the RodSim defaults section. If a user creates a simulation by importing a third-party input file, the fields will be populated from the input file.

  4. Lastly the user must select a surface pumping unit. There are three options when selecting a pumping unit; the user can select a branded pumping unit, a custom pumping unit, or then can chose to create a new custom pumping unit. Selecting “Branded Unit” for Pumping Unit Type allows the user to select from a library of manufacturers and product lines. Once the Manufacturer/Line is selected, the user can select from a list of models offered by the manufacturer for that product line. If the user selects “Custom Unit” for Pumping Unit Type, they can select from a list of user defined Manufacturers/Lines and Models. If the user selects “Create Custom” for Pumping Unit Type, a window will appear where they can enter the specifications for a custom pumping unit to use in the simulation; the newly created custom pumping unit will be saved in the custom pumping unit library for future use. When a simulation is created by importing a third-party input file with a branded pumping unit, the pumping unit will be populated if it is contained in the RodSim branded pumping unit library, otherwise the pumping unit selection fields will be blank. If the third-party input file contains a custom pumping unit, the unit will be populated in the design and added to your custom pumping unit library in RodSim.

Once the Pumping unit is selected, the user then needs to select the rotation and crank-hole number (if applicable) as well as the Motor Type.

If a hydraulic pumping unit is selected, fields will appear where the user can define the velocity profile of the polished rod; those variables are described below:

Hyd Turn Around Time

The duration of the pause at the top and bottom of the stroke.

Hyd Up Acc Time

The duration of the upward acceleration for the upstroke.

Hyd Up Dec Time

The duration of the upward deceleration for the upstroke.

Hyd Up Down Ratio

The ratio of the duration of the upstroke to the duration of the downstroke. If it is 1.5, the upstroke is 1.5 times the duration of the downstroke.

Hyd Down Acc Time

The duration of the downward acceleration for the downstroke.

Hyd Down Dec Time

The duration of the downward deceleration for the downstroke.
