Your simulation won’t run or completed with errors. Here’s how to diagnose and fix common issues.

Validation Errors (Before Running)

When you click Run Simulation, PetroBench checks your inputs. If something’s wrong, you’ll see error messages.

Rod Length Mismatch

Error: “Rod string length doesn’t match PSN depth” Your total rod length needs to be close to your pump setting depth. PetroBench allows some tolerance, but if you’re way off, it won’t run. Fix:
  1. Go to Rod Details tab
  2. Add up your rod section lengths
  3. Compare to your PSN depth in Tubing Data
  4. Adjust rod lengths or PSN to match

Missing Required Fields

Error: “Required field is empty” or red highlighting on fields Some fields must have values before you can run. Fix:
  1. Look for red-highlighted fields across all tabs
  2. Check each tab: Simulation Preferences, Rod Details, Tubing Data
  3. Fill in any empty required fields
  4. Click Save All and try again

Values Out of Range

Error: “Value must be between X and Y” You entered a number that’s outside the acceptable range. Common culprits:
  • Pump fill > 100%
  • Negative depths
Fix: Adjust the value to something within the valid range. The error message usually tells you what’s acceptable.

Pumping Unit Not Selected

Error: “Select a pumping unit” You can’t run without specifying equipment. Fix:
  1. Go to Simulation Preferences
  2. Click Select Pumping Unit
  3. Choose a unit from the library
  4. Save and try again

No Rod String Configured

Error: “Add at least one rod section” You need at least one rod taper defined. Fix:
  1. Go to Rod Details tab
  2. Click Add Rod
  3. Configure at least one section with type, grade, diameter, and length
  4. Save and run

Runtime Errors (During Simulation)

The simulation started but failed partway through.

”Simulation failed” Generic Error

This usually means something unexpected happened. Try:
  1. Refresh and run again — Sometimes it’s a temporary glitch
  2. Check your inputs — Look for unusual combinations (extreme values, conflicting settings)
  3. Simplify — Remove optional features (IPR data, rod guides) and try again
  4. Contact support — If it keeps failing, there might be a bug

When to Contact Support

Reach out to [email protected] if:
  • The same simulation worked before but now fails
  • The error message doesn’t make sense
  • You’ve tried everything and it still won’t run
  • Results are clearly wrong despite correct inputs
Include:
  • Well name and simulation name
  • Screenshot of the error
  • What you’ve already tried
