Foam Column Density
Estimate foam height, hydrostatic pressure, and pumpability for the gas-liquid mixture above the pump using the Foam Column Density calculator.

The Foam Column Density calculator estimates gas-liquid mixture properties in the foam column above the pump: foam height, hydrostatic pressure, fluid gradients, and whether conditions look pumpable.
Open the calculator
- Calculators hub: open Calculators in the main navigation, then choose Foam Column Density.
- From a well: open the well → Calculators → Foam Column Density. Some depth and fluid fields prefill from the well; foam geometry and rates usually need manual entry.
Results update live as you change inputs. There is no Calculate, Reset, or Export button, and nothing is saved back to the well.
Inputs
Wellbore Depth / Geometry
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Pump/Separator TVD | True vertical depth of the pump or gas separator |
| TVD of Foam Column Top | Depth where the foam / gas-cut column starts |
| Equivalent Gas free Liquid Above the Pump | Height of liquid you would have if all entrained gas were removed from the foam |
Fluid Properties
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Oil Density | Oil API gravity |
| Water Specific Gravity | Produced water specific gravity relative to pure water |
Flow Rates
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Oil Rate | Daily oil production |
| Water Rate | Daily water production |
Units follow your Preferences. Invalid inputs clear the outputs until you fix them.
Outputs
Foam Column Pressure / Gradient
| Output | Description |
|---|---|
| Foam above the pump | Pump/Separator TVD minus foam column top |
| Hydrostatic Pressure of Foam Column | Pressure from the average foam gradient across the foam height |
| Average gradient of foam column | Mean gradient of the foam column |
| Pressure Gradient of Foam at the Pump | Gradient at pump depth |
Fluid Property Gradients
| Output | Description |
|---|---|
| Gas Free Fluid Specific Gravity | Oil and water blend by rate cut, with gas removed |
| Gas Free Fluid Gradient | Gradient of that gas-free fluid |
| Minimum Pumpable Fluid Gradient | Gas-free gradient × 0.6 (60% liquid assumption) |
Current Conditions
| Output | Description |
|---|---|
| Current Fluid Gradient | Same as the pressure gradient at the pump |
| Percent of Gas Free Fluid Gradient (%) | Current gradient as a percent of the gas-free gradient |
Foam Column Density Gauge
A % Liquid gauge from 0 to 100 with a threshold at 60%:
- Above 60% → Pumpable
- At or below 60% → Not Pumpable
That 60% rule is fixed in the calculator; you cannot change the threshold.
Use Cases
- Check whether the foam column above the pump still looks pumpable
- Estimate foam hydrostatic pressure for well control context
- Compare current fluid gradient to the gas-free baseline
